Looking forward to 2022…

Hi everyone -

First off, thank you very much for visiting my website and for your interest in my my music.  Tough to believe that 2021 has come to an end. I’m not going to lie - the past two Covid years have been a bust. But I do like to look to the positive!  So here are some of the accomplishments for the year…

I continue working closely with my mentor/vocal coach, Micah Barnes. He keeps me honest and with some tough stretches this past two Covid years, I really needed him in my corner.

It was a honour to be invited to perform for Hazel McCallium’s  100th birthday celebration video.  We recorded (off the floor) at Metal Works Studio and Jay Boehmer, Pat Collins, Rob Thaler and I had a grand time.  “Hazel: A Celebration 100 Years In The Making”,  and my own video for single “Reminiscing” released on Valentines Day (Feb 14th) and both received much praise.  It was a thrill to be rewarded with a $2,000 grant from MISSISSAUGA ARTS COUNCIL that I was able to put towards the making of “Reminiscing.”.

We managed a couple of fun porch gigs in the summer as seen in the photo to the left - joining me again were my son Joe Leslie and the wonderful Pat Collins.

Also pleased that my album of 2020, ONE FINE MORNING still has 3 tracks in rotation on Toronto’s Jazz FM91 and I’m certainly not done promoting it, given the setbacks endured these past two years. So stay tuned for another video featuring another single from this project!

I did manage to hunker down and get some writing done, which I’m pretty excited about - just 2 more and I’m ready for another recording project.  So nice to collaborate again with the wonderfully talented award winning guitarist Bob McAlpine on said tunes.  More collaborating is planned for the very near future with the very talented Heather Christine!  We are planning some shows together so STAY TUNED on that front!

I’m also thrilled to announce that I have just signed with an agent, Ilene Elkaim of Six Dynamix Inc. Ilene and I have some exciting plans for more digital shows - and eventually live shows at venues across the province but I don’t want to get too ahead of myself - it may take a while for these to come to fruition!

So continue to look after yourselves.  I know that if you’re reading this you’re a jazz music fan, so as things open up more and more, get OUT there. The music community is chomping at the bit, waiting to take stages across the country, and they/we need you. Get out and join with friends, make some new friends, hear more and learn more about the vastly talented musicians in your own community and revel in the blissful joy of LIVE music. It’s a beautiful thing…

"In the world of jazz singers, it is a rare lady that is able to sound fresh and personal yet still keep a sense of the jazz tradition.    Canadian vocalist Denise Leslie straddles the world of balancing art and songbook with an impressive debut that gives a sense of street pulse savvy along with a finger snapping accessibility." - George W.
